10 free-agent tight ends the Broncos could target in 2019

Every fan knows that the Denver Broncos need to find a long-term solution at the quarterback position. But it’s not the only position on offense where the Broncos are in need of immediate help.

The Broncos haven’t had a consistent presence at pass-catching tight end since Julius Thomas emerged — and it’s been even longer since they’ve had a tight end who excelled as both a blocker and a pass catcher.

Though Jake Butt showed promise prior to his season-ending ACL injury, he can’t be relied upon as the team’s top option. The same holds true for Troy Fumagalli, who missed his rookie season thanks to a groin injury.

The Broncos really need a veteran presence at the tight end position. Gary Kubiak likes to utilize the tight end in his offense, Case Keenum does good work in two tight end sets, and if a rookie QB were to take over, a quality tight end can take some pressure off that rookie.

The good news is that there are plenty of players to consider in free agency. While most of the players who are about to hit the market would be considered big names, that doesn’t mean they can’t be productive.

In some cases, they may be sitting behind a top tight end and haven’t had the chance at an expanded role. Others may be the type that just needs to find the right offensive. Look no further than Eric Ebron for an example — he never caught on with the Lions, but after he was cut, he signed with the Colts and paid dividends.

I’ll go over a few tight ends who are set to become unrestricted free agents and evaluate whether or not the Broncos should put these players on their wish list.
