49ers vs. Broncos Wednesday injury report: Bad news in Denver

The San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos went through their first practice session of the week Wednesday as they prepare for their game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Sunday, and the big news of the day came out of Denver where it appears one of their key players suffered a season-ending injury.

Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who was leading the team with 71 catches for 868 yards and four touchdowns, went down at practice Wednesday with a torn Achilles, according to a report from ESPN. Sanders is listed on the injury report as a limited participant, but later in the day the Broncos placed him on injured reserve while claiming wide receiver Andre Holmes off waivers from the Buffalo Bills. The injury could be devastating on offense for the Broncos, who decided to trade veteran receiver Demaryius Thomas to the Houston Texans before the trade deadline and have a young receiving corps past Sanders that includes rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton as well as first-year receiver Tim Patrick, who had a brief stint with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie in 2017.

Missing practice for the Broncos Wednesday were linebacker Shaquil Barrett (hip), cornerback Tramaine Brock (ribs), defensive end Derek Wolfe (ribs), and cornerback Chris Harris, who will be out this week and beyond after suffering a fractured fibula in the team’s win over Cincinnati last Sunday. The 49ers had four players of their own miss practice in running back Matt Breida (ankle) and safety Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder), who have already been declared out for the week; left tackle Joe Staley, who had his usual rest day; and linebacker Dekoda Watson, who was placed on injured reserve later in the day with a calf injury.

One notable return to 49ers practice on Wednesday was that of wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who has missed the past two games due to personal issues. Goodwin has yet to address the issues publicly, but he could be in a position to be back in the lineup against the Broncos on Sunday.

“We’ll see,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday, per 49ers.com. “I’m just happy that he’s doing better, good enough to be back in the building. I just got to see him a little bit in meetings today, so we’ll see him out at practice today and see where he’s at, how he looks, and we’ll decide as the week goes.”
