Denver Broncos unlikely to be featured on Hard Knocks in 2019

In 2013, NFL owners made three stipulations for a team to be ineligible to be forced into being featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks, an annual NFL Films documentary that follows a team through training camp.

Teams cannot be forced to be featured on the show if (1) they have a new head coach, (2) they have made the playoffs within the last two years or (3) they have have been featured on Hard Knocks within the last ten years.

Because the Denver Broncos have a new coach in Vic Fangio, the league cannot force them to be featured on the show this summer. The Broncos could volunteer for the show but considering that they have declined being featured in the past, it seems unlikely that Denver will volunteer.

This year, five teams are eligible to be forced to appear on the show: the Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins.

The Jon Gruden-led Raiders would be an intriguing pick, as would Odell Beckham’s Giants (a team that may draft a QB early in the draft). The 49ers, led by Jimmy Garoppolo, would also offer interesting storylines.

Last year, the NFL announced in May that the Cleveland Browns would be featured on the show. Fans can expect an announcement for the 2019 team to be made around the same time this year.
